Tomorrow is September 1 NaNoWriMo is 2 months away and the answer would be an unequivocal yes! I won last year’s nano for Jamaica dead and I’m ready to go again in November. I’ve already chosen my story, which is a take on the Sherlock Holmes franchise. I am putting a new twist on the story as it came to me while gaming one night. Don’t ask me how that happened. I really don’t know. However, the premise is a good one. It fits with my comedic style but I’m not yet sure whether there will be a romance or not. I suppose the characters will decide that as we go along, but at this moment, they really dislike each other. I’m not gonna say any more on that subject as the characters will probably use a roll of duct tape on my face. Dare I say anymore.
The secret to my success!
In order to stay focused, I joined a nano group in Peterborough where we would meet twice a week at a local coffee house or at the library. I made some new friends and a local friend of mine also joined nano last year. During these meetings we would talk about our stories and just write. Sometimes we would hold world wars where we would write for 20 minutes and the one with the biggest tally of words would win a small price. We took this practice after hours as well and did word wars in a small group on Facebook. The practice kept me focused on what I was writing and I was really surprised to see how much I could get done in one night. It also improved the writing process. Since then we have made our own group called the nano rhyme wars where we get together at the same coffee house every month and offer each other. Challenges in preparation for the big month of November.
- have a beverage and snacks available, one needs to feed the brain and all those words with something.
- Take breaks – get up and walk around so you just don’t feel like your butt is being glued to the chair. Also, do hand exercises so your fingers don’t get stiff.
- Don’t worry if you don’t finish! It’s not a competition putting pressure on yourself to finish a project will only cause stress. I don’t perform well under stress. I would be happy if I got a project 3/4 of the way done and have my sanity at the end. Winning is a bonus, and I felt good when I did as it was a major accomplishment for me!
- Above all else. Have fun with it!
