Prologue Summer of 1979

I couldn’t sleep. Everyone else in the cabin was snoring way but I tossed and turned.

After an hour I gave up and decided to sneak out the back window like I do almost every night.

Don’t ask how I managed to get away with my nocturnal escapes I don’t even know. I should’ve been caught long time ago but maybe I’m just lucky that my cabin mates and counsellor are heavy sleepers.

I had grabbed my shoes and put on my Adidas after I managed to get out the window. I was wearing long pyjamas and a sweater good I’m usually cold at night even with the sleeping bag.

I have to admit that I can move with stealth after so many years of orienteering at camp and playing survival. No one would ever see or hear me coming.

I crept through the woods behind the cabins and the senior girls section and made it to the nature centre without being detected. I love the night sounds of owls hooting it would land animals foraging in the underbrush.
I was nearing the outdoor chapel when I heard voices. Was it possible that I wasn’t the only camper who like to roam around after lights out?
The one voice was older possibly a counsellor at three other sounded like preteen girls around 12 or so. I was only 15 myself.

A young voice spoke up. “Tell me again Janet why we are doing this.”
“It’s easy she’s a brat and needs to be dealt with. She’s this close to ratting me out to my assistant Michelle. Somehow some was actually listening to this pathetic whiner!” Janet said disgusted

Tina spoke up again “no one would believe her Janet she lies about us bullying her.”
Janet looked at Tina “who are you kidding Tina? We both know you and Donna are relentless in hounding her but if Michelle takes this to the director of the camp I could get fired. No Tina, killing Katie Manning is the only way I can save my ass. Work with me on this or we all go down. I know about your jewelry record one more offense puts you in a reform school Tina. Trust me darling you don’t want that.” Janet stated.

Tina huffed “fine! So she’s out like a light what did you use?”
“If I told you… Well you know.” Janet snickered.

“Well as long as it works and we don’t have to deal with this sniveling brat anymore. If she’d only acted like a normal kid not a weird little nerd we would’ve left her alone.” Donna spoke for the first time that night.

Janet laughed again “sure blame the dead kid!”

Janet watched as Tina and Donna lifted the body encased in the sleeping bag and put her in the hall then started covering the shallow grave with dirt.

I couldn’t breathe I was in shock! How could people do such a thing to a young kid. Should I report what I had seen? No way no one would believe me and say I was just dreaming or they question how I knew about such a thing that I get in trouble for sneaking out after dark. I had to think about this and I did so as I made my way back to the cabin and let myself in. By this point I was exhausted and fell into bed.
