chapter 3 present Day Patrick
to say Patrick was confused would be a gross understatement.
“What you mean she doesn’t remember me?” He asked the nurse.
“Mr. Adams listen, I’ll get a doctor to talk to you. We need to determine what’s causing this. Like I said oh see if he can run a CAT scan. It could be physical it could be psychological. Maybe the trauma of the accident caused her to forget what happened to protect herself.
Patrick side. Okay, fine but I can’t lose Carolyn. Not like this!”
“You won’t. We’ll do everything we can to help her now go home get some rest you been up all night I’ll bet.” Amy admonished
“yeah, I have been I better go a call later to see how Carolyn’s feeling see if she’s up to visitors.” With that Patrick left us tired as he was, he managed to get home without killing himself or anyone else. Whether Carrie remembered him or not she did meet him, and he would be there for her. After shower and ate our sleep Patrick called her boys Steve and Oliver who lived on the West Coast.
After hearing what her father said Steve spoke up “do you want us to come out dad? I have air Miles enough for me and Ollie.” He declared
“give it a few days Steve. Your mom needs her rest.” Patrick explained
“dad, is something going on? “His son questioned
Patrick didn’t want to worry Steve or Oliver, but he couldn’t lie either “she’s a bit confused son. They are running tests to make sure she didn’t scramble something in her brain.” He tried to make light of it
“dad is you saying she doesn’t remember?”
Patrick amazed at his son’s perceptiveness. “Don’t worry until we need to Steve, I’ll keep you in the loop.”
“Yes, please do. Did they catch the asshole who hit her?” Steve fumed at the other end.
“Not yet they’re still looking. The detective’s in charge call me and we’ll keep me informed as to the progress.
“Thanks dad if we don’t hear from you in a couple of days were coming out anyway!
“Stay put until I say so. I don’t want to overwhelm your mom!”
I woke up feeling disoriented and the lady he the corner to my bed asked me if I needed help.
No, it’s okay Ruthie. I’ll be fine if I could remember of my life, I feel a whole lot better.” I managed to laugh about it.
“I understand dear. I’m 85 in my noodle doesn’t work all the time either.” Ruthie chuckled.
“Yeah it sucks alright. Damn, I’m thirsty. It was my call button?”
I’ll call for you Carolyn.” Ruthie offered
“thanks, I’m glad someone knows who I am.”
“That’s easy hiring is written on the whiteboard over your bed.
“Oh okay, who knew?” I answered
at that point Amy entered the room. “Did Someone ring for help?” She asked.
I spoke up “Ruthie did but I could use a drink. You have juice or soft drinks?”
“Your husband says your diabetic Carolyn. I can get you a diet soda.” The nurse explained
. “That’s fine. You have my meds? Do I take insulin?
“Yes, but just at night. Your husband gave us all the details we’ve got you covered.”
“Is he coming back? I need to apologize for freaking out on him. It’s not his fault I can’t remember who he is.” I felt guilty
“you’ll get your chance. He’s coming back after dinner I am home to get some rest and some food. He understands about the amnesia we have to take you for a CAT scan to see what’s going on in your head you can have a drink before you go, I also have defeated some contrast for your IV for the test.” Amy added
“that’s fine I just hope I can remember soon. “
Amy nodded in agreement “yes I know, it must be frustrating for you.
Amy smiled and laughed with the promise of a drink.
I lay back and drifted off again.
1979 Camp sumac
at lunch there was a special announcement the director spoke. “Is with great sadness that I announce the loss of Young camper last night. Katie Manning in cabin 54 had a bad reaction to a mosquito bite and suffered anaphylactic shock.” She will be missed here at the camp.”
A collective groan went up and I thought “nice cover up for murder dude!” I wanted to speak up and say was bogus, but I couldn’t let people know I roam around it will after dark they kick me out for sure or even accuse me of killing the kid.
I felt a chill down my spine and the hairs on my neck stood up on and I looked around to see Jana Parsons staring me down.
“Oh crap, she knows.
I was brought back to present when the nurse spoke up “Carolyn? Here’s your pop. We only had diet ginger ale. Is that okay?”
“Yeah that’s fine I’m so thirsty I could drink just about anything. And you still trying to shake off my nightmare.
