I managed to get back to the cabin without further incident but I was out of breath. My counsellor,Cathy was there. She looked at me and said “hey, you look winded. What happened?”
I sat down on the bunk across from her. “I was swimming and I swear Tina tried to drown me!”
Cathy looks incredulous “what, how?” She demanded
“I was doing laps trying to relax and someone tried to pull me under. When I yelled for help they let go and swam off.” I explained
“did anyone see you or the other person?” Cathy inquired
I shook my head “no Tim just saw me at that point, but he didn’t see the incident as it occurred. I just told him I had a cramp in my foot, but Tina was there the other end smirking at me daring me to rat her out!”
Cathy got up and paced the floor “we have to report this!”
Again, I shook my head “no Cathy! I have no proof it was her it was just a feeling I had when she was staring a hole in my head from the other end of the pool. Tim saw nothing. He can’t help us!”
“Darn it!” She exclaimed
“it’s okay Cathy you can say dammit I can take it.” I said chuckling
she nodded “okay, well I guess Tina must suspect you saw something that night.
I shrugged “or, Janet told her and might have and is keeping an eye on me in her absence.”
Cathy sighed “I’m worried about you and Carolyn and Michelle too.” Cathy stated
“well, it won’t matter as tomorrow camp is over. I better get packing
I woke up from my nap with total recall the Tina had tried to kill me that a. It now makes sense that she tried to run me over recently. This also proves she still quite the psychopath she was a 12.
What I needed to remember now was what prompted her sudden desire to end me at this point.
I got up and went to my laptop to do more research on the events that summer and worked until Patrick called me for dinner.
I went out to the kitchen to find candles lit and the aroma of a roast of some kind.
“What’s all this?”
“Oh it’s nothing really but I wanted to make a special meal for you.”
Not one to look a gift-horse in the mouth I breathed in the aromas coming from the oven. “It smells divine. It’s not my birthday is it? Our anniversary?”
“No nothing like that but I do want to sit down and plan our time at Camp Sumac this year. The nurse said you’d have a walking cast by then and the fresh air might do you good.”
“It might also trigger memories both good and bad. I think we should go Patrick I need to find out why people want to kill me over a 40 year old murder. I also want to remember us and the boys.
Patrick put his hand on mine. You will. Let’s eat and then we can plan.
